USIJ Urges Congressional Review of Upcoming USTR Special 301 Report
February 18, 2025
On Wednesday, February 12, the Alliance of U.S. Startups and Inventors for Jobs (USIJ) sent a letter to the Senate Finance Subcommittee on International Trade, Customs, and Global Competitiveness. In the letter, USIJ urged congressional oversight of the U.S. Trade Representative’s (USTR) 2025 Special 301 Report to ensure it effectively defends American intellectual property (IP) rights, warning that recent USTR reports have failed to challenge foreign governments’ misuse of compulsory licenses and other anti-IP practices, jeopardizing U.S. innovation and economic growth. USIJ calls on Congress to reaffirm the Report’s role in identifying and contesting global IP threats, ensuring fair market access for American inventors, and opposing efforts to weaken international IP protections.
“Failing to confront foreign IP abuses risks ceding America’s leadership in innovation and economic growth. Congress must ensure the Special 301 Report holds our trading partners accountable and upholds strong intellectual property protections for U.S. inventors.”
