On April 2nd, the Alliance of U.S. Startups and Inventors for Jobs (USIJ) sent a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Ranking Member Dick Durbin raising concerns about four pending patent bills that could jeopardize America’s innovation economy. While the bills aim to curb anti-competitive practices in the pharmaceutical industry, USIJ warns they’re built on flawed assumptions and could stifle startups, slow medical breakthroughs, and weaken the patent system that drives U.S. leadership in tech and biotech.
“Weakening patent protections in one sector would have ripple effects across the entire innovation economy. When the patent system becomes less reliable, investors and inventors may opt not to pursue high-risk ideas. That’ll lead to fewer startups, fewer breakthrough technologies, and slower economic growth.
USIJ supports efforts to make medicine more affordable and improve access to healthcare. But achieving those goals should not come at the expense of the system that allows transformative technologies to come to market.”
