USIJ Urges House Judiciary to Reject the ETHIC Act
June 2, 2026
Today, USIJ submitted a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin ahead of the Committee’s upcoming hearing on “Medicines and IP: Balancing Innovation and Access,” urging the Committee to reject the Eliminating Thickets to Increase Competition (ETHIC) Act. USIJ asserts that the bill is premised on misconceptions about how patent law works and would discourage legitimate innovation by limiting the number of patents innovators can defend on a single product—increasing risk for small companies and startups that depend on strong patent protections to attract investment and develop new medicines.
“Policies that weaken the reliability of patent protections will only make it more difficult for U.S. startups and inventors to continue pursuing breakthroughs that benefit patients.”
